Modem will not 'pick up' phone line.

When I try to connect to the internet I get an error message which says 'no dial tone' However if I first get a dial tone by picking up the phone I can connect no problem. If I put the phone down again I am then cut of from the net.

I have tried the modem cable in both the 'line' and 'phone' sockets with no difference.

It seems to me that I have a modem with a faulty 'Line' socket.

Has anyone got any ideas on this problem?

What happens if you plug the modem cable directly into the phone socket i.e. no phone connected?

Are you using a phone extension cable? These are not all suitable for use with a modem, some give the very fault you have!

You got there first, spargo! The modem is not 'loping' the line although it can 'hear' it, suggesting that one leg is not connected. Could be the modem or the lead.

'loping' = 'looping'. 'loping' is what John Cleese does!

The phone cable works fine with my old computer so I don't think the problem lies there.
