modem throwing wobbly!

hi guys ,help needed please?
a friends modem running on xp wont connect to internet (blueyonder dial up) it keeps giving a engaged tone....so called the technical helpline and told them...they said dial the number your using to connect to internet of a normal phone and if ya hear the modem the other end then ya modem is at fault...which it is yet 2 days ago he was surfing the net no probs...anyideas as to what to check device manager saying this device working properly...its buggin us both as to why it works now gives out a engaged tone...anyides or pointers would be truly gratefully accecpted with thanx.......nigey ;-)

that it IS engaged - I get this or "the number you have dialled is busy, please hang up and try again" or similar messages. Sometime this goes on for a good 10-15 mins. Have you tried re-dial or reinstalling the modem drivers?

Have you tried the diagnostics feature in the modem folder? That should tell you whether your computer and modem are in harmony.

To test your modem, goto <Start><Programs><Accessories><Communications><Phone Dialler> then dial out to a number you knwo to be working (perhaps your mobile). If your mobile rings, your modem is OK, if not you have either a hardware or a software problem. Report back and we'll take it from there.
