What speed setting do you have in modem properties?

Do you have the latest driver installed for your modem?

If not then download it from the manufactuer's website; if you do, try Removing the modem in Device Manager and then rebooting to allow XP to reinstall it.

Check latest drivers are being used firstly, if your ISP uses dialup software check the connection settings in there and also in Windows.

It could be a case that the line is damaged, overused or old. Are you using a long extension cable from the modem to the wall socket? this can cause connection drops and slowdowns. Is your telehpone provider doing and work in the local area maybe crap weather?

If your on a BT line they only promise a minimum of 28.8K.

There you go lol a nice list of thing to check.
