I am with Virgin Media and for some time now have suffered from dropped Broad Band connection if I changed to a Router would this solve the prblem or does it lie elsewhere??

No it would not make any difference if your setting were not correct

Change these setting and see if broadband still dropping connection

Lan Card Setting

Right click on Local Area Connection Display Icon on task bar

Click Status-General-Properties

At the top of display the type of Lan card will be displayed

Click Configure-Click-Advanced Tab

Click- Flow Control-Change to Enabled if Disabled

Click-Power Management Tab

Untick if selected "Allow Computer to turn this device off to save power

Network Connection Setting

Click-Start- Setting-Network Connection-New Connection Wizard

Select-Connect to the Internet-Next

Select-Set Up My Connection Manually-Next

Select-Connect using a broadband connection that is always on

Is this cable or over a BT line?

  GBL 09:30 01 Nov 07

I am on BT land line not cable. It has been OK for years but this has started a few months ago, also the fluctuation in download speed, this morning is only 6.2 but normally it was over 7.

It's unlikely to be the modem that's at fault so I don't think changing to a router would help. First of all I would check your internal phone wiring click here

A thought, what modem is it, do you have the correct drivers for the high speed connection?

US Robotics, like I say it was OK until recently and have been on BB for a couple of years now so maybe one of those things.

How long have you been on ADSL Max (up to 8 Meg) though?

About 12 months I think, certainly for some time.
