modem not being detected

I have given my brother my old computer, and he is having difficulty connecting to the internet, as it will no longer detect the internal modem. It is not the original modem, and since my system needed to be restored after I began using broadband, I didn't bother re-installing drivers. Somehow I managed to stop it popping up as found hardware on booting, but i can't remember how.

My brother has tried AOL helpline, and they have made it worse - it is now detecting a modem that isn't there, but still not detecting a modem.

The computer is running Win ME and the modem is a generic v.92 fax data modem.

The answer is probably very basic - any ideas would be fantastic!!

Thanks
Leah

Go to device manager and delete all that have a yellow exclamation mark. There should be one there for a simple communications device.

reboot and have the modem drivers handy to reinstall.
