MODEM DRIVER UNINSTALL FAILURE

I need to uninstall my old modem driver in my Pentium MMX Win 98 PC. When I open Control Panel, Modems, highlight that modem in the list and click REMOVE, it disappears from the list. But the next time I restart the machine it re-appears; yet there is no internal modem in the PCI slots. What could be happening? Is there a better way of uninstalling a modem? And, how do we change the default modem from a list of them shown in Control Panel/Modems? Please help. Thanks.

Try deleting the driver via device manager or in safemode.

Find the name of modem as in Device Manager, delete from registry using regedit.
START> RUN>REGEDIT>EDIT>FIND
