Modem disconnects before email has been sent

I use Microsoft Outlook as my email editor and have it set to disconnect after sending and receiving mail. I also use Norton Internet Security. I have unchecked the option to scan outgoing mail but it is still doing it which means if I am sending an email with an attachment it takes so long to scan it that the modem drops the connection before it can be sent. I can get round this by turning off the option to disconnect after sending but I prefer to have it on. Anyone know how I can force Norton to stop scanning outgoing emails?

Here's how to do it the Symantec way. If you have the 2003 version of NIS, then click on link near bottom of page for further info. TC.
