Modem dials ISP at start up

  Keetos 18:14 20 Apr 03

My OS is Windows 98 SE. Every time Windows starts up the modem is activated and dials my ISP. If I close the dialogue box without activating IE or Outlook it reappears. If I activate either of these manually once I'm connected to my ISP it doesn't. Any ideas much appreciated.

Possibly some spyware trying to phone home - have a look at adaware click here for some more advice.

Download Adaware and run it to see what is happening.

Also do a google search for spyware, firewalls, "phone home"

and you will get some idea of what may be happening.

Also something you may need to try..... If the pc boots up when the home phone rings. Go into the BIOS and look at the setting fors LAN. we had all kinds of problems with an old pc because it thought it was on a LAN. it Wasn't it was the onely PC in the house at the time.

Just a thought.

Check in yuor Startup folder and see if there's anything in there which might start it. Also go to msconfig and see what you have loading on bootup. Start > Run, type msconfig, hit OK, click Startup tab.

With my 98se install,it's MSN Messenger that refuses to allow me to stay disconnected. If you have any prog showing in the lower right corner, disable them and see if it cures the problem.
