Why do some modems need 4 pin RJ11 cables and some will only work with 2 pin cables.Awestruck
Where does it say that.
I've only ever come across 4-pin and 6-pin RJ11s, and for modems I've only seen the 4-pin variety.

Thanks Taff.As you say "as clear as mud".Laptops seem to generally use 2 pin and desktops use 4 pin. However I could not connect a clients Dell desktop last week with 4 pin. It gave the 678 error message. I changed to a 2 pin and it worked.I always carry both types of cable just in case, but I would love to know why there are two types.Awestruck
The two types of cable are a pain. In general terms I`ve also found that American manufactured modems use the two pin too.
