Mixed SATA and IDE drives

I have a Mesh PC with a SATA hard drive. I want to add a spare IDE drive to the PC. However, when I reboot the PC, it recognises this new drive rather than the SATA drive with Windows - I do not even see my SATA drive in the list of devices to boot from. This is the same whether I set the IDE drive up as a master or slave. There is probably a very obvious solution, but I just can't see it.

In the BIOS of my ASUS motherboard there are two sections on the BOOT page. The first is 'Boot Disk Priority' which includes CD-Rom, Floppy, and the HDD which is set as 1st Drive in the second section called 'Hard Disk Drives'. This section allows you to position your hard drivers as 1st, 2nd or even 3rd if you have enough drives fitted. The 1st drive is obviously the one that will be used to boot from. You may have similar settings.
