Missing .vxd files

I have an old Win98 machine which, at the end of POST, states
'Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows'
vnetsup.vxd 'Press any key to continue'
I press any key then get the same message for:
vredir.vxd
then
dfs.vxd
and finally
vserver.vxd
Then I get the 'teal' background with a window headed 'Windows Networking' stating 'Unable to load the dynamic link library:
msnp32.dll
'The system cannot find the file specified'
I then click OK and the Desktop loads and all is OK.
I seem to recall tinkering with the network settings on this machine some time ago so I guess this is what is being referred to.
Any suggestions for a fix, please?

Have you tried the System File Checker?
Go to Start\ Run type SFC then click OK.
You may need your Win98 CD if any system files are found to be missing or corrupt.
See how you go.
