Missing sound with video file

I have a video clip (using windows media player) but when it plays there is no sound. I had to down load a codec to play it in the first place but that seemed to hace worked (except for the sound). Just before the video starts a brief message comes up at the bottom of the WMP window saying error downloading codec but it then continues.
The properties of the file say the bit rate is 128kbps, aduio sample size is 16 bit, and the audio file format is m-peglayer-3 so it appears that there is an audio file present.
I tried searchingnprevious threads but to no avail.
Any help/advice would be much appreciated, thanks
