Missing sound icon

For some reason I have lost the sound icon in my system tray and have been unable to replace it. I have gone to Control Panel,Speakers and Sound etc. and have ticked the box marked Show icon but I get the message that the programme to show the icon is not installed. Any help would be appreciated as I use the mute button quite frequently. Regards Carper

Are you saying that your sound is working correctly but that you don't have the icon for muting, volume control etc?

Yes that's correct. I can mute it or change the volume etc. by going through control panel but that's a bit long winded. Carper

This is an alternative from another forum......

Hi
I have read several long and complicated ways of fixing this. My el simple technique is:
1) Take memory stick to neighbour running the same platform (XP)
2) Go into Start/Search/All files and folders and type in
sndvol32
3) When this comes up drag application into memory stick drive
4) Plug memory stick into your own computer, open WIndows Explorer and drag file into Windows / system32 (You might have to agree to replace the old one - which is corrupt hence the problem - or you might not if the old one is missing altogether.)

Works a treat.
