Missing Network Connection Icons

For some reason I've lost my network connections icons and the connection icon in the taskbar, anyone got any ideas?

I'm using XP and can still connect but if the stay connected prompt doesn't come up the only way to disconnect is to shutdown.

If I select refresh in the Network Connections folder I get the message "The Network Connections Folder was unable to retrieve the list of Network Adapters on your machine. Please make sure that the Network Connections service is enabled and running" Which I have checked and it is running and also the device manager which shows no problems.Further than that is a bit over my head really.

Thanks.
