Missing Network Adapter In Device Manager

I want to connect my laptop to my desktop PC using a crossover cable.

The desktop PC has an ethernet card, but it is not listed in Device Manager under Network Adapter.

I assume some files/folders are not installed. I've run sfc /scannow without result.

Anybody any ideas how I can find/install the necessary devices/files/folders, etc.

Thanks.

I take it you've tried the Add new hardware wizard....
If so, is the device listed in Device Manager when Show Hidden Devices is ticked?
May also be worth checking that the card is seated in your motherboard correctly and that the device isn't disabled in your Bios
