What is the drive letter for your external drive?
For example if it is G:
Type chkdsk G:/ r
I am not sure this will work but it's worth a try. RAW indicates no file system, and needs to be formatted.
Perhaps someone with more knowledge can help us out.

OK rawprawn the drive letter is F, thanks for your help its appreciated.

Just right clicked the drive in My Computer and selected format went to 100% again and told windows cannot complete the format. So did as rawprawn advised in command prompt and this is the result:

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\*****>chkdsk F:/f
The type of the file system is RAW.
CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives.

C:\Documents and Settings\*****>
Anyone got any thoughts on how to format from RAW to NTFS????

Oh by the way when i tried to format the drive from my computer when the box to format opens it tells me that the drive capacity is 811GB, now im gaining GBs

Hi Sparkly,

Sadly it sounds as if the drive is faulty.

CHKDSK shows the filesystem as RAW when it can find a partition but it is not formatted. If you didn't format the drive prior to this problem then the drive is failing.

Hi Zaggerman
"If you didn't format the drive prior to this problem then the drive is failing"

It was formatted (NTFS)750Gig been fine for about 2years,then i noticed it had changed (see first post) Im beggining to think you are on the right track with it going t*** up but thanks for the reply.

Update on this post.
Got everything back to as was state this is how i did it:
The drive was seen as 811gb RAW and would not format.
So ran Acronis True Image 2009 it saw the drive, ran the add a drive in utilities deleted the partition so it this left me with an unnallocated partion, then i ran Partition Magic it saw the drive as an unnallocated partion created a new partition (left everything as default)Partition Magic did its thing and left me with a 698GB free NTFS external drive again, one happy bunny thankyou god and all here for your replys.
