You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the orginal setup CD-ROM

Well i looked it up on google and i found that somone had made a post like this and they went into safe mode by pressing F8 but when i do this it just comes up with the same thing so i cannot acess file recover as it wont boot to get that far...Any suggestions? really struggling..

You will need to copy the config file from the backup hive registry for that you need a boot disk to access the drive.

Download a XP boot CD or the 6 floppies from click here

Set the laptop to use the Cd as first boot device in the BIOS.
Boot from the CD Start Windows Setup and press R to access the recovery console. Select your Windows installation, then type the administrator password – press Enter if there isn't one.
Now enter the following commands:

CD C:\
CD "system volume information\_resto~1"

You'll see a list of restore point folders with names such as RP1, RP2 and so on. Pick the restore point you wish to use, using the folder date stamps to guide you. Enter the commands:

CD RPx (the restore point you chose)

This takes you into the folder containing the restore point snapshot files. Copy the Registry backups so that they overwrite the existing Registry files.

COPY _Registry_machine_system C:\Windows\System32\Config\System
COPY _Registry_machine_software C:\Windows\System32\Config\Software
COPY _Registry_machine_sam C:\Windows\System32\Config\Sam
COPY _Registry_machine_security C:\Windows\System32\Config\Security
COPY _Registry_user_.default C:\Windows\System32\Config\Default

Type the command exit to close the Recovery Console and restart the PC.

Microsoft winows 98 start up menu?

What operating system do you have on your laptop?

"Windows could not start ebcause the following file is missing or corrupt

is a XP problem.

You need an XP boot CD or 6 XP floppies to suit the version of XP you have ie Home or Pro.

Yeah, still didnt work

  R-Simmo 15:08 30 Nov 07

ok, thanks anyway, its a laptop so when you say 6 xp floppies you mean floppy disks? I think im gonna ask mates, see if they have a disk i can use.
