Welcome to the forums!

Upgrading could be very expensive. We have one member here who is red hot on excel and may know of cheaper or even free alternatives which are compliant with the full version.

You need Office Standard Edition 2003 Upgrade. This requires a version of Works to qualify as an upgrade. e.g. click here

Or get Open Office for free. However, VBA macros written in Excel won't run.

Visual Basic for Applications - a way of programming Office to do things that aren't built-in. If you don't know what they are then I doubt if you use them.

Open Office's spreadsheet is called Calc. You can save spreadsheets in Excel format so that they can be read by anybody who has Excel or Excel viewer.

In effect yes, the spreadsheet can be read by excel users.
