Microsoft Word Runtime error

Newish computer, XP Home with MS Works. I have been using Word without trouble in the past. However, today, after about 15 minutes using Word, I get a box entitled Microsoft Visual C ++ Runtime library. In the box is the usual red cross followed by "Runtime Error" and C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\WINWORD.exe.
Underneath this is "abnormal program termination". I have to press OK upon which my desk top appears and there is no trace of my document on the computer. So far, if I just access Word, but do not type anything, the error does not happen. It is only if I start typing. Norton says there is no virus.
Can anyone help on this?
Regards, Airbornenot

The most likely cause is a corrupted normal.dot

Do a search for normal.dot (you will need to enable searching for hidden files and folders). tename it to abnormal.dot then try using Word.
