Microsoft Word pre-installed or not?

  Baskerville 20:00 01 Oct 06

Hi All,
Just bought a new laptop for a neighbour and she wanted to know how to create a letter in Microsoft Word, I nipped round to show her and for the life of me cannot find it on her system not in all programs or anywhere, as Windows XP was pre-installed is it not automatically loaded? or does the user have to load it as she has an official copy of Windows XP which she bought at the time of purchase?

Many thanks,

MS Word is a separate program not part of Operating System Windows XP.

Look in Start - Programs - Accessories - Wordpad

This is a wordprocessing package built into Windows and uses file extension *.rtf.

Most computers come supplied with Works and not Word which is part of Office XP.

MS Works Suite is a cut down version of office suite but works in a similar way but without a lot of the features of the full thing.

Re Openoffice/Office compatability, OpenOffice opens Office files, but Office will not open OpenOffice documents that are saved in Openoffice format. OpenOffice can be adjusted via its properties to save by default in assorted Office formats if you want to improve compatability.
