Microsoft Messenger Alert

My system has Windows XP, is connected to broadband, and uses a firewall. Every 2 minutes I get an alert that "An instance of C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe is attempting to access the Internet for the first time".
This alert is annoying in itself, but it also succeeds in interupting other programs, - especially on-line radio or TV.
I have turned off Windows Messenger, and in the options box unticked everything. I have done the same for MSN Messenger.
Any ideas as to how I can stop Windows Messenger continually trying to access the Internet, - short of actually uninstalling the program.
