microsoft intellimouse battery low message

Fool at the Mill 15:18 22 Mar 03

microsoft intellimouse installed as expected and initially worked well with XP. Now I get messages saying the mouse battery is low, the mouse ceases to function properly and eventually the computer does not respond to the mouse. If I switch off and restart it again works for a short time. The problem is not with the batteries in the mouse. Any ideas?
