Why not pose your problem here?

Surely, Microsoft don't offer direct-to-consumer help? Or am I wrong?

I think they will (if you follow the right avenues), but at a very hefty price.

One could try answers.microsoft.com, but the Microsoft support personnel seem to come over as just reading from a standard script and being pretty useless.

They do (or did). I tried telephone support a few years ago for a work-related problem.

They wanted £25 up front and it was a Premium Rate line. They found my problem and said it was a "Known Issue" and no cure. I wasn't pleased.

Mack1, I think it depends what the problem is, I have had free telephone advice before, never tried Email. Why not do compumac suggests and ask here for starters, you may even get a better response than you will from Microsoft and quicker.
