Microphone not working

  kwil2 00:17 16 Mar 05

I want to do some voice recording using mike/handset.I'm running XP Home SP2 and the set works fine with other computer, same spec.
I ran MS own Sound Recorder just to check but there was no sound registering.
I checked Volume area to ensure mike was not 'muted'...still no joy...
Then ran hardware test for Voice and found the test meter again registered nothing.
I've tried this with three headsets, all of which work elsewhere, but draw a blank here.
I'm clearly missing something..can anyone help?

check 'control panel/sounds and audio devices/audio' and check the default device for sound playback and sound recording is set correctly maybe.

if its a mic plugged into your soundcard the select your soundcard as the default recording device. if its a webcam select this here.
