Microphone not registering on system

Two points:
1.I've just reinstalled everything (XP Home + SP2) and plan to record voice over headset/microphone, probably with Audacity software. However, doing a basic test with Microsoft's own paltry 'Sound Recorder' I found I wasn't getting any sound from my mike. I checked volume controls to ensure nothing was 'muted'...and did the Hardware mike check.. but same result. My lead's in the right 'Mic' socket and headset works perfectly on other computer.
2.I also want to transfer sound files from an external source, but don't have a 'line in' socket (I think because the soundcard 'SoundMaxDigitalAudio'is tied to the motherboard)I intended to use 'LP Recorder' software for this.
Can anyone help?..
