Microphone for classroom on Skype

We are using Skype to conference with another school. The several PC microphones I have tried only pick up voice when held close to mouth. The normal mikes have a big jack whereas the PC ones have a small jack to fit the mike socket. Does anyone know of a mike that will pick up a voice from a metre away and still plug into the computer.

My Logitech Pro9000 webcam with built-in mic picks up voices from several metres away.

Your best bet is a Boundary Effect microphone which is placed on a tabletop and will pick up from all round. Often used for conferences and in interview situations.
