Micosoft update icon on taskbar - whats it doing?

There's an icon that intermitantly appears on my taskbar which shows the message dowloading updates when the pointer moves over it(presumably from Microsoft). It's not always present and it doesnt seem possible to to find out exactly what it is downloading, by for example right clicking on it.

Does anyone know how I can find out more about this icon and how I might be be able to disable its function if necessary?

Control Panel > System > Automatic Updates > Take the tick out of "Keep my computer up to date..."

The icon is what you say. It's just teelling you that updates are downloading and then they will install.

you can use windows up date to manually check and install updates click here also to check what and when updates were installed.
