messenger pop ups

hi
i recently started to get "messenger pop ups" including one which was advertising software to stop these. is there a cheaper and easier way to stop these. i believe they come thru windows messenger or something and i dont even use it.
all help gratefully acknowledged.

i am wondering if this has anything to do with me switching to aol as i never seened to get it much before

Had same persistent, annoting problem for ages. I asked for help from Microsoft. Their answer:- You can protect yourselffrom receiving unsolicited commercial instant messages from sources not on your "allow" list by blocking messages from "all others" -
1. From the main NET Messenger window select the "Tools" menu.
2. Choose "Options"

3. Click the "Privacy" tab

Select "All other users" from your "Allow" list and then click the "Block" button. 5. Click "OK" when finished.
