Merging songs

I have several songs that have several versions. I want to take a part of the first version and then add the second version, merging them together with a sligth overlap with the first fading out as the second fades in. and so on so that I have one track with several versions, all nicely joined together. I'm sure there is a technical term for it!
What I need is recommendations of audio editors that will do it. They will have to be simple since, as you can see, I'm a novice! The result is for personal use so I don't need super-duper-high-fi.

It's called fading in and/or out.
AUDACITY is a free music editing programme. it also has tutorials to help you make it do what you want.

Here is the link to it's online manual...click here
Check it and see if it does what you want, Either way, if you're into music editing it's a good programme to have in your arsenal.

Two recommendations for the same software, almost simultainiously, that must be an omen.
