I am about to upgrade my computer Thanksand having experienced the trials of Vista and having a lot of older software that I run I think that I will go for XP Pro. Can someone tell my the best amount of memory to get for this new machine. Is 4gb to much??

My XP recommendations (I run XP Pro with 1GB)

256MB - not enough

512MB - adequate

1GB - the sweet spot

2GB and over - overkill.

If you're getting a new system, though - I would recommend you to get 2GB - 4GB would be far too unnecessary.

Vanilla XP 32bit cannot see / use all of 4GB, so a waste of money.

the 64bit version can make use of 4GB or more, but whether you'd notice any improvement in performance over a machine with 1GB I doubt.

I have XP, originally with 512mb, and now with 1GB as per DieSse's recommendation, and he's right.

Thanks to both. You have helped make up my mind as to the path I am taking and saved me some money as well.
Thanks again
