Memory Type questions

When buying Memory does 'Unbuffered', 'ECC' and 'Non-parity' matter? I've noticed some sites just list the names eg '512 DDR 2100' while others list that and also the other details such as ECC etc. When buying memory, do you have to take into account these details or are they just extra jargon thrown in?
