memory stick malfunction

my memory stick has stopped working; it used to be temperamental anyway where i would have to put it in at a certain angle to get it recognized. i last used it four days ago and i plugged it into my college pc today where as it finally recognized it, it changed its name to removable disk x and when i clicked on it it told me that it needed formatting, would i like to format it. of course i selected no as it has all of my work on. is there anything i can download to recover the files? how do i fix my memory stick?

I really feel that to continue to use it when it was being,as you put it,tempremental rather foolish. Particularly when you seem to be using it for your college work. I have no doubt that there is software that may help, unfortunately I cannot recommend any personally. But I think an investment of a few quid in a decent USB stick would be advisable.

This is a common problem, you may be able to recover it by taking it apart and re-soldering the contacts to the internal PCB. I have had about a 80% success rate with this method.

I hope you have the files backed up somewhere other than the stick

memory sticks only have a limited number of write operations

try running chkdsk / r on the stick

run and type CMD to bring up a command prompt. Then type Chkdsk x: /r

where x is the drive letter assigned to the stick

this may recover the file structure if not then you may need some software to recover the data

okay nothing is working so i've downloaded the software you recommended, but it is still doing nothing. It says that there are no usb's attached to the computer when according to the my computer icon there is. is there any other software i can use to recover the files? or how can i make this software work properly? thanks so much for your help so far.

i've tried to even open it in that software but it keeps telling me that i need to format it before i can use it.
