Memory reporting discrepancy

I have 1gig of RAM installed on a machine running Windows XP Pro. There is a discrepancy between what XP is reporting and information from other sources.

1. XP System Information reports that Memory (RAM) is 512MB
2. Task Manager reports that Physical Memory is 1gig
3. Memory check on boot reports 1gig OK
4. The diagnostic utility FreshDiagnose reports 512MB
5. The diagnostic utility AIDA32 reports 1gig
6. The DirectX diagnostic tool "dxdiag" reports 1gig
7. The diagnostic utility Belarc reports that total RAM is 1gig in 2 banks of 256MB each - now that is interesting arithmetic!!

Anyone have an answer for this?

Are you sure the RAM sticks are all the same type ?

I use Si-Soft Sandra which tells you all the information you will ever need and identifies individual RAM sticks and even tell you the manufacturer.

Thanks for the link to Sandra. I will report back with the results.

Thanks for the suggestion. The default RAM setting in XP Pro is "blank". Changing or modifying this setting reverts the system to "Selective Startup". Reverting back to "Normal Startup" reverts the RAM setting back to "blank".
