This is a bit complicated, I will try and be as clear as I can.
I have 3 memory slots on MSI mobo.
"Siw" says there are 4 and max module size 128mb ie
Mobo manual knows the are 3 and gives the following
DIMM 1 (Bank 0 & 1) S/D 64mb-1gb
DIMM 2 (Bank 2 & 3) S/D 64mb-1gb
DIMM 3 (Bank 4 & 5) S/D 64mb-1gb
DIMM 4 (Bank 5 & 6) S/D 64mb-1gb
Max supported memory 64mb-3gb
S=single sided D=Double sided.
I have 4 memory cards
2 184pin PC2100 DIMM 266
2 184pin PC2700 DIMM 333
My PC will work using any 1 of these albeit slowly.
Any combination of 2 will work better (In any slots)
Any combination of 3 causes problems normally BSOD on booting or during use, probably 7 times out of 10 but sometimes all seems OK.
Can anyone advise on this please as I would obviously like to use max memory from the cards I have, 512 will suffice but if I can get 768 it would be better.
...of different speeds. At the very least, they will all work at the slower speed - at worst, as you have found, they will give strange results and/or refuse to work together. My advice: Go to a reputable memory supplier [Crucial or similar] and quote your MB type. They will tell you what will work best in your machine.
I got the memory (3 cards) from Crucial (Over a period of time) the other was the original supplied with the machine. Used the Crucial 3 point check to ensure it was correct.
Mobo is Microstar (MSI) 648Max Series MS-6585.
The manual states that you can just install 2 moduels of double sided pc2700 ram. If you are using three of these then it will not boot.
Funnily enough Crucial's tool has given me options recently on different boards of mixing PC2700 & PC3200 on same mobo!But I agree with martjc, with Crucial you can't possibly go wrong as they guarentee their product will work in yr board if you use their guide tool.
With top brand later memory types there should be less liklehood of problems just so long as you stick to the maximums of any specific type per DIMM slot in your mobo spec.

Thanks for your response and link, I have the original printed manual and the line "You can only install two PC2700/DDR 333 double sided module"
is missing from my page although the rest of the page layout is exactly the same (Probably been updated).
That aside all my mem cards are only single sided and it
does seem unlikely to me that 512 is the max I can use.
I have been thinking as you have 2 pc2100 and 2 pc2700. I don't think, at the moment, that the single> double sided issue comes into it, at the mo.
Have you tried pc2100 in slots 1 and 2 ( nearest the cpu) and pc2700 in slot 3. Or pc2700 in slot 1 and pc2100 in slots 2 and 3.
The other consideration, if the above is no good. Is to alter the bios settings.
I'll have a quick glance at the manual to see if there is anything constructive in it.
In the bios, things to try:-
Under advanced chipset features > dram cas latency. Is the setting on spd? This is usually the default setting, try droping it to it's lowest speed ( 3T).
In the same section, what is the timing setting mode? You could try ( safe ).
Under frequency/ voltage control.
What are your settings for;
cpu/dram frequency control
Some scope there for trying some different settings.
BIOS settings are,
dran cas SPD
cpu/dram frequency BySPD
dram frequency 166
Have in front of me 1 266card and 1 333 so there must be 1 266 and 1 333 in slots. They are in slots 1 + 2 but I dont know which way round until I take it apart yet again.
I`ll also try your other suggestions as to what to put where, I have done it at random in the past, will now keep a record (Like I should have done in the first place).
