Memory problems

  leadwellie 14:59 20 Feb 03

I have recently upgraded my PC.
The upgrade consited of a 70GB hard drive, new motherboard supporting an Athlon XP 2000 CPU, a new graphics card and 512 MB RAM.
The problem is this.
I cannot either defrag or run scandisk and I get the following messages.
1. Scandisk. could not continue because your computer does not have enough available memory.
2. defrag. Your computer does not have enough free memory to defragment this drive.
Prior to attempting either I have closed all running programs via Ctrl,Alt,Del.
But no joy.
Can anyone out there offer me advice?
Many thanks in anticipation.
