memory problems

I recently bought a new pc (emachines 2200) it came with 256mb ddr ram 266 pc2100,single sided.I bought an extra 256mb memory for it of the same type although it is double sided and a different brand.I placed it in the second slot next to original memory. The problem is that with new memory inserted the pc wont boot up and monitor displays no signal message. Is there something i need to do or have overlooked. Thanks.
