memory installation

I have 512meg of 2 x 256meg sticks of Pc2700 DDR memory in my computer.
for some reason, the motherboard has three memory slots, so at present there is a slot empty.

Can another stick of 256 or 512 meg ram be put in the spare slot?

I ask because somewhere in the brain I have an idea that DDR ram can only be installed in pairs.

If I stick an odd stick of memory in, will it cause a big hiccup?

Your thoughts please

Should not cause any problems. If there are 3 slots then you should be able to use all three. Though some motherboards have slots for different types of RAM, so I cannot be sure. Try visiting click here and search for your system, it should tell you what you can put in the system and give you prices for the RAM (I recommend - cheap prices and fast delivery)
