memory doubt

Can a 500MB memory stick breakdown yet still operate as a 250MB one? Or is Belarc Advisor giving a wrong reading? I had a 500MB in one slot and 250MB in the other but now Belarc states 250 in each. The performance of my Notebook is rather poor these days so I could believe the memory is less than it was.

Yes it's possible - unusual but possible.

If you go to the Control Panel - System how much RAM does it show there? - that's what Windows is really recognising.

Yes you can have a bad connection to one side of the module.

If windows is reading it wrong try removing and refitting it to remake the connections and see if it then reads right

500 = 516

250 = 258

I've never heard of it happening but that doesn't mean it can't I guess.
Don't put too much faith in online scans. Crucial's told me I had ZERO ram fitted when I looked to increase from 1 to 2 gb.
