Memory Configuration

I have an Intel AL440LX mother board which has three memory slots the first of which is currently fitted with a 128mb PC100 memory module and the system works well. I have decided to add more memory by installing another 128mb module in the next slot. According to the manual it can take three such modules, and the total memory is auto-detected. I have now tried two memory cards of the correct type, and neither is recognised in Device manager or the bios. Both still show 128 total memory. I then added an old 32mb module to see if that would show up. It didn't, but when I removed it and rebooted the start up beeped twice and told me that memeory had been removed?.
The rest of my set up is Windows 98SE Pentium 2
And for it's age is still performing well.
Any Ideas would be appreciated.
Thank You
