memory chip sizes!

Why does mem size go: 8,16,32,128,256mb?? and not something more sensible like: 10,100,500 if you know what I mean?? And I suppose the same applies to hard drive sizes....

Memory sizes are what they are because of the binary numbering system used by computers.

The numbers which determines the memory size are the addressing capability - since this is derived from a binary number, you get maximumaddresses that are all powers of 2.

No the same doesn't apply to disk drives in quite the same way - and you do get 10Gb, 20Gb, 40Gb etc.

There are many extra factors in hrad drive tecnology - butat the heart of drive capacity is how much you can get on one side of the actual disk - you will then get multiples of that for a drive - depending on how many disks/sides are used.

And just why is 10, 100, 500 a more sensible set of numbers?

Just because in every day use we have a numbering system which uses 10 as it's base, doesn't make t the most sensible.

There are many who would claim that a numbering system baes on 12 has many advantages

It's easier to pack 12 things in a box (4x3) than 10.

You can divide 12 into thirds, halves and quarters - you can't with 10

Why do you think dozens are still in such wide use - it's because of these advantages.
