on post bootup the memory shows 256mb when windows has booted system shows 1gb which i installed myself why would that be, have i installed the wrong mem, also get constant pc freeze doing video encoding

Are you sure that is not the graphics card mem it is showing with the gfx bios?

My systrem immediately after the switch is pressed displays this then, as the screen changes displays system RAM drives etc.

If its showing in the top left corner of your screen
it will be as Psi fox suggests, as mine does exactly the same.........

I think PsiFox might be right the video bios,make and ram size of the graffix card loads on screen first then the bios/post screen after this screen should tell you how much ram you have it may also run a test counting the ram up to what you have installed,it can be quite quick on some systems,if the correct amount shows in windows i dont think there should be any need to worry.
