Medion Laptop lockup

I have a Medion 1MHz laptop - it's actually a rebadged Asus L8400C. It operates fine whilst connected to the mains supply through the transformer/rectifier but when I try to run it on batteries it locks up every time.
I'm wondering if it's anything to do with an Asus system management program called PC Probe which controls the fan so that it comes on earlier than normal to keep the processor temperature down. I am using it because the MB and processor had to be replaced previously due to overheating.
Is there any chance that this can put an excessive drain on the battery and cause the system to lock up?

Can you run it in safe mode on the battery?
