Do you have divx player

Windows Media Player cannot play DVD movies because it doesn't have the necessary Codec. You need a proper software DVD player such as PowerDVD or WinDVD (although I think there are some cheaper or even freeware players too).

is xvid not part of divx and if it is,is this also needed to play dvds could you explain mgmcc

and this little utillity click here will tell you the codec you need to play any file if you are unsure.it will also tell you if you already have the correct one installed.

I play DVDs with both PowerDVD and Windows Media Player9 - you have to configure WMP9 to play DVDs from Tools>Options>File Types and also enable DVDs.
