MDI Connection

I wish to connect a keyboard to software on my XP Pro computer. I think I have connected the cables OK but get no response in programs that should accept a kb entry.
Any help would be very welcome

What sort of keyboard? Does it have its own drivers? What about the connection - PS2 or USB?

You mean MIDI, I presume. How are you connecting the keyboard at present?

Actually, having read your title, I may well have grasped the wrong end of the stick... if so, ignore me and I'll go away...

The keyboard is a Yamaha PSS580 and has a midi out socket.

I have a cable that I used to use on earlier PC and have plugged it in but s/w show it as having no driver.

Many thanks everyone - I have gone for a USB/MIDI cable. Thanks Diodorus Siculus
