Mcafee vs Adware

When Macafee scans my computer it only scans 19,000 files, wheras Adaware scans 80,000.

why is this?

All scanners have different criteria over what they scan.

Some might scan the System Restore area which would account for 1000s of files some might not.

Some might scan all files others might only scan "infectable" files.

i must admit, i dont think any of them are perfect, ive been infected with the Surfya virus which none of them can get rid of for example

It may also be a matter of what is counted as a file by each programs.

For example, is a .CAB or .ZIP counted as 1 file or as the number of files that they contain (+ 1 for the .CAB / .ZIP itself?). I believe AdAware does the latter. McAfee may do the former or even deliberatly ignore things like .CABs on the assumption that on access scanning will detect any viruses if and when something is taken out of the CABinet.

If you set adawre to do a smart system scan it will only scan ares that are most at threat,if you set it for a full scan it will scan every file and folder, resulting in a larger longer search, and more files.
