Hi All,

when I boot up my pc it sometimes says:

'Bootup from ATAPI cd rom: Boot disk failure. Insert system disk Press enter'

I've asked about this before and all seemed to be solved until recently (over last few weeks).

I am able to get PC working if I reseat the cable from my M/B to the H/D. So I have several questions:

1. Does this suggest that the cable could be faulty/worn out?

2. What should I do when I put my system disk in the A drive? It gives the options to install win98se with cd rom help etc.

3.Do I really need to do this?

4.What will I loose?

5.Could it be that my MBR is corrupted (ing)? How do I repair it?

Many thanks in advance, for any and all advice given.

Mike

What is the boot device sequence in your BIOS ?

Should be A: C: CDrom

Try swapping over the cable with your CD drive (assuming you have 2 cables) and see if it changes anything.

Do you have a cd in the drive,if so remove it.
What is the bootup sequence in the bios???
floppy/cdrom/ide0??

What appears to be happening is that your boot order is probably

1. Floppy IDE

2. IDE

3. CDROM

and due to a bad connection between MOBO and HDD your are eventually defaulting to CDROM and if there is a disk in the CDROM you get the invalid disk error.

Most likely all you need to do is to ensure that the Signal cable to the Hard Drive is making a good connection. For all the cost you might as well renew it.

Hi Paranoid Android and Rayuk,

the bootup sequence in BIOS
is as follows:

1)Floppy :2) HDD1 :3) cd rom.

there is no cd rom in the drive when boot up sequence starts.

PC is now starting ok for a while because I have reseated the cable from mb to hd. But I know it will soon be giving the:

'Bootup from ATAPI cd rom: Boot disk failure. Insert system disk Press enter' message. (probably within a day or two).

Thanyou for your help.

I may have had a similar problem. I had an IBM HD and could only get a boot-up by, as you say, re-seating the cable. HD eventually packed up completely. Hope you've got everything backed up, just in case.

thanks doug......all backed up...and hard copies of inportant stuff.

You could try FDISK/MBR it cannot hurt, from Dos Floppy

thanks woodchip. I'll give that a bash 1st.

I assume I just reboot with startup disk in floppy drive and type in what you have written above?
