Maxdata PC (XP) not seeing drives

Hi - my son's Maxdata PC accepted another HDD (IDE - whereas 'C' drive in original PC is SATA) and worked well. Then, one day the PC failed to boot and was obviously not seeing the 'C' drive. Removal of the extra HDD cured this and all was well even when the extra HDD drive was re-installed. A week later and it suddenly does not see the DVD burner. Does this sound like a rootkit - or is it something less sinister? Thanks

what I have seen is that sata and IDE do not mix very well on some motherboard

Try updated drivers for the Sata and IDE drivers from Motherboard Manufacturers

Sounds like CMOS battery dying and BIOS setting to defaults.

Fit a new battery and set first boot device to the SATA drive (may need setting as SCCI).
