matshita (panasonic) dvd drives

I have looked everywhere for a fix or a forum for this problem, but to date I have had no success.
My mat*!@:a (Panasonic) uj-831d dvd r-w drive has stopped recognising dvd’s. It will play audio cd, and run, and install games
But any dvd it does nothing, it doesn’t show any files in explorer. Has anybody come across this or does any body know where to get a firm ware update?

Unfortunately it sounds like the DVD laser has failed if CDs work ok but DVDs don't read or write.

Before you buy another DVD RW £30, try

Uninstall and reinstall the IDE channel the drive is on.

Maybe the DVD laser is dead. The CD laser might still be working hence it works with CDs and not DVDs.
