Managed switch as coupler vs router

I have a multi port wired home network which utilizes a media room equipment closet as the central network hub. Unfortunately, my router/wap was ineffective in that location, so had to be moved to one of the network nodes. As a result, I am coupling the feed from my cable modem inside the closet, sending it to the router location. From the router, there is a feed back to the closet where an unmanaged switch then distributes feeds to the rest of the house.

This setup works just fine, but I now need to upgrade my switch, and am potentially looking at something managed. My question is, what are my configuration options? I'm thinking I could use a separate VLAN to couple the modem feed and send it to the router. Alternatively, would I be able to use a managed switch to replace the router functions, then simply use the previous router in WAP only mode?

Any assistance is appreciated!
