malicious attack then things missing....

Windows ME Braodband connection.

Went out this morning leaving computer on with firewall active etc. Get back to find various windows open. Close windows icons missing on desktop. Restart shoots me into safe mode then tells me that registry damaged can't access safe mode. Reboot into normal mode however icons from quick launch missing and outlook is damaged and can't access most recent data file. Presuming malicious attack. Any thoughts what has happened and where to go from here? Have done virus check. Nothing there.

Any help would be really appreciated particularly trying to get back my lost outlook data.

Any chance of doing a System Restore?

  sihalls 14:47 05 Mar 03

already tried two different restore points. Also there is this nice big file called ememm386 sitting in my windows directory. Not associated with any particular application and has the date 2047 on! Me thinks perhaps it isn't meant to be there?

sorry re. restore points it wouldn't actually let me do a restore got part way through then did a reboot then said couldn't restore.

click here for JV16, as good a registry tool as you can get, relatively safe to use as well.

Backup king!

Pop your XP CD into your CD Drive...Set your computer to BOOT from the CD ROM Drive...

Now on windows setup choose repair option!
